1. Effects on Stability

PTFE emulsion is a thermodynamically unstable system whose stability mainly relies on electrostatic repulsion between PTFE microparticles. pH directly regulates this key balance.

Electrostatic Stabilization Mechanism (Zeta Potential)

In a weakly alkaline environment, PTFE microparticles become negatively charged by adsorbing hydroxyl ions (OH⁻), with a Zeta potential of approximately -50 mV to -65 mV. This strong electrostatic repulsion is sufficient to overcome van der Waals forces and keep particles dispersed.If the pH drops to the isoelectric point of PTFE (around pH 2.9–3.2), surface charges are neutralized, the Zeta potential approaches zero, and the emulsion rapidly destabilizes and undergoes irreversible coagulation.

Stabilizing Effect of Alkaline Environment

Commercial PTFE emulsions are kept weakly alkaline mainly for the following reasons:

· Inhibition of microbial growth: A weakly alkaline environment suppresses bacterial growth, preventing them from consuming surfactants and destabilizing the emulsion.

· Suppression of acidic degradation: The alkaline environment neutralizes residual acidic substances from polymerization, avoiding equipment corrosion and performance degradation.

Risks of Acid Addition

When adjusting pH with acids such as acetic acid, the acid must be added slowly in small amounts with gentle stirring and pre-dilution. Rapid addition or excessive acidity will disrupt the charge balance of the system and also cause immediate emulsion breaking.

2. Effects on Impregnation Performance

Impregnation requires the emulsion to effectively penetrate the substrate and form a uniform coating. pH influences this process mainly by altering the viscosity, wettability, and surface charge of the system.

Permeability and Adhesion

pH affects the rheological behavior of the emulsion. An appropriate pH optimizes spreading and capillary penetration on the substrate surface and avoids defects. Excessively low or high pH may reduce coating adhesion.

Key Parameter for Co-Coagulation Process

In composite material preparation, adjusting pH allows control of the Zeta potential of two or more types of particles, enabling uniform and efficient co-coagulation through electrostatic interaction. For example, adjusting the pH of a carbon black and PTFE emulsion mixture to 7–10 achieves complete coagulation without additional coagulants.
