Jiangsu Aokai New Materials, a professional manufacturer of PTFE high-temperature fabric, explains as follows:

The widespread application of PTFE high-temperature fabric in industrial conveying, packaging machinery, food drying and other fields is closely attributed to its excellent wear resistance. The surface of PTFE high-temperature fabric is coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which features an extremely low coefficient of friction, typically 0.05–0.1, only about one-tenth that of ordinary metal surfaces. This property endows PTFE high-temperature fabric with outstanding self-lubrication. When objects slide or move across its surface, the contact resistance is minimal, effectively reducing mechanical friction and wear.

In actual working condition tests, the wear resistance of PTFE high-temperature fabric is more than three times that of ordinary textile materials. In industry, this advantage is often used to replace traditional metal bearing gaskets or guide rail materials, reducing friction noise and component wear during equipment operation. Some high-strength PTFE high-temperature fabric products are further reinforced with graphene composite layers or metal mesh skeletons to enhance scratch resistance and structural stability. Therefore, within its designed service life, PTFE high-temperature fabric delivers reliable wear resistance under friction from conventional flexible materials such as textiles, paper and plastic films.

However, the wear resistance of PTFE high-temperature fabric has a clear physical limit: its performance depends entirely on the integrity of the surface PTFE coating. Once scratched repeatedly by sharp metal edges or hard particles, the coating structure will be damaged.

I. Complete Loss of Non-Stick Performance

The non-stick property of PTFE high-temperature fabric comes entirely from the surface PTFE coating. With extremely low surface energy, the coating repels almost all sticky substances, including adhesives, inks, molten plastics and food residues.

Degradation performance:Once the PTFE coating is worn through, the rough, microporous fiberglass substrate underneath is directly exposed. Adhesives that were originally repelled will penetrate and firmly attach to the fiberglass gaps.

Consequence:The PTFE fabric loses its core easy-clean and non-stick functions. Surface residues will accumulate rapidly, disrupting normal conveying and accelerating further wear, creating a vicious cycle.

II. Sharp Drop in Temperature Resistance and Structural Failure

The rated temperature resistance of PTFE high-temperature fabric (long-term service at 260°C) relies on both the PTFE coating and the fiberglass base fabric. After coating wear, temperature resistance collapses in two stages:

Loss of short-term heat resistance:Worn areas lose the barrier protection of PTFE. Exposed fiberglass quickly becomes brittle due to thermal shock and oxidation at temperatures far below the rated value, creating a high risk of sudden breakage in high-temperature zones.

Substrate oxidation and structural disintegration:Under continuous high temperature, unprotected fiberglass reacts violently with oxygen, leading to rapid loss of base strength, pulverization and fracture. The fabric will tear and disintegrate from the worn point, completely losing structural integrity as a high-temperature conveying medium.

III. Concomitant Degradation of Other Properties

In addition, the chemical corrosion resistance of PTFE high-temperature fabric is also lost. While intact PTFE can resist strong corrosives such as aqua regia, worn areas allow chemicals to penetrate the coating and attack the fiberglass directly, causing rapid corrosion, swelling and a sharp reduction in service life.

If coating damage is detected, the PTFE fabric should be repaired or replaced promptly to avoid total failure of the entire conveyor belt due to localized wear.
