Jiangsu Aokai New Materials Co., Ltd., a professional manufacturer of PTFE coated fiberglass fabric, explains the advantages as follows:

I. Environmental Protection & Safety: The Dominant Strength of PTFE Coated Fiberglass Fabric

PTFE coated fiberglass fabric holds overwhelming advantages in environmental compliance. It is chemically inert, non-toxic, odorless, and produces no fiber dust. It can meet FDA food contact certification and comply with RoHS 2.0 environmental directives. For this reason, it is the undisputed preferred sealing material for cleanroom applications in food processing, medical devices, pharmaceutical equipment, and other hygiene-critical industries. Its production, use, and disposal are all safe for humans and the environment.

In sharp contrast, asbestos fibers are a confirmed Group 1 carcinogen, a fatal risk completely avoided by PTFE coated fabric. While graphite is non-toxic, it is brittle, hard, and prone to chipping and shedding. The flexible, clean physical form of PTFE coated fabric is far superior in high-cleanliness environments.

II. Temperature Resistance Analysis: Precise Operating Range and Limits

PTFE coated fiberglass fabric has clear technical limits for temperature resistance:

· Continuous operating temperature: -70°C to 360°C

· Short-term high-temperature impact resistance: up to 400°C

Within this range, it maintains excellent dimensional stability, with no significant loss of strength or carbonization. For applications with stable long-term temperatures below 360°C, PTFE coated fabric is an excellent alternative to asbestos.

Its main limitation is a relatively low upper temperature limit. When the operating temperature exceeds 360°C under continuous pressure, creep and softening will occur.Compared with asbestos (heat resistance up to 550°C) and graphite (up to 1600°C in inert atmosphere), PTFE coated fabric is not suitable for extreme ultra-high-temperature applications such as boiler doors, high-temperature flue gas ducts, or high-temperature valve packing.Selection must strictly ensure the service temperature does not exceed its glass transition point.

III. Seal Performance & Chemical Inertness: A Double-Edged Sword

Under suitable working conditions, PTFE coated fiberglass fabric delivers nearly perfect sealing performance. It features an extremely low surface friction coefficient (approximately 0.05–0.1) and excellent non-stick properties. This means it will not adhere to or corrode metal flange surfaces during installation, making disassembly extremely convenient.

More importantly, it resists corrosion from nearly all strong acids, strong alkalis, and organic solvents. In low-pressure pipelines handling highly corrosive fluids, only PTFE coated fabric can simultaneously ensure zero permeation and long service life — a unique advantage unmatched by asbestos or graphite.

However, its sealing limitations are also significant:PTFE coated fabric has relatively poor anti-creep properties and limited pressure resistance.Under sustained high bolt loading (e.g., over 15 MPa), it undergoes slow plastic flow, reducing sealing pressure and eventually causing leakage. Therefore, in high-temperature and high-pressure petrochemical refining scenarios, it usually cannot replace flexible graphite composite gaskets with high resilience.Forced use in high-pressure steam sealing can easily lead to seal failure.

Material Selection Conclusion

Preferred applications for PTFE coated fiberglass fabric:Low to medium temperature (<360°C), medium to low pressure, highly corrosive media, food/medical grade hygiene requirements.

Applications to avoid:Sustained ultra-high temperature (>360°C), ultra-high pressure conditions, gap filling requiring high material resilience for deformation compensation.

Summary

PTFE coated fiberglass fabric is not an all-purpose material, but within its suitable temperature and pressure range, it far outperforms traditional asbestos and graphite in environmental performance and corrosion resistance.Understanding its performance limits is key to maximizing its sealing value.
