Jiangsu Aokai New Materials, a PTFE high-temperature fabric manufacturer, explains that when the surface of a hot press plate becomes uneven, covering it with PTFE high-temperature tape is a common emergency solution. To ensure effective repair without compromising heat transfer, the key lies in proper selection of PTFE tape thickness and correct application techniques.

First: Evaluate the Condition of the Hot Plate

Before applying PTFE high-temperature tape, assess the flatness of the hot plate to determine whether temporary remediation or fundamental maintenance is required.

· Minor unevenness (scratches, tiny dents):Covering with PTFE high-temperature tape is an efficient and quick remedy to restore surface flatness and provide non-stick protection.

· Severe deformation (warpage, thickness error exceeding 0.3 mm):PTFE high-temperature tape can only be used as a temporary emergency measure. For long-term reliability, mechanical planing or professional correction of the hot plate is recommended. Unrepaired severe deformation will lead to uneven pressure even with multiple layers of PTFE tape and may pose safety hazards.

Second: Scientific Selection of PTFE High-Temperature Tape Thickness

Based on the severity of unevenness, two main application strategies are available.

1. Direct Covering Method – For Minor Unevenness (< 0.1 mm)

For very slight surface defects, a single layer of PTFE high-temperature tape can be applied for full coverage.

· 0.13 mm PTFE tape: The preferred standard thickness, most widely used in industry. It effectively covers fine scratches, provides basic wear resistance, and has minimal impact on heat transfer efficiency.

· 0.18 mm – 0.25 mm PTFE tape: For enhanced wear resistance. Suitable for slightly deeper scratches or applications requiring greater durability, offering good coverage and longer service life.

· 0.3 mm – 0.5 mm PTFE tape: For maximum defect coverage. Used for deeper imperfections. Note that increased thickness raises thermal resistance, which may slow heating speed or extend production cycles.

2. Graded Leveling Method – For Obvious Dents (≥ 0.1 mm)

When visible dents exist on the hot plate, a single layer of PTFE tape cannot level the surface. A “graded leveling method” using multiple layers for step-by-step filling is required.

Steps:

1. Measure and locate: Accurately measure the area and maximum depth of the dent.

2. Apply base layer: Cut a piece of PTFE tape (recommended 0.13 mm or 0.18 mm thick) slightly larger than the dent and apply it directly to the recessed area.

3. Layer filling: Check the leveling effect. If gaps remain, apply smaller pieces of the same or thinner PTFE tape centered on the previous layer. Repeat until the dent is substantially leveled.

4. Full surface covering: After leveling, apply one large, full sheet of PTFE tape (e.g., 0.13 mm or 0.18 mm) over the entire hot plate as a uniform working surface to ensure flatness and non-stick performance.

Third: Selection of PTFE Tape Width and Application Guidelines

Tape width also significantly affects final performance.

· Wide tape (e.g., 100 mm, 180 mm): For large-area coverage. Reduces overlapping seams and avoids uneven heat transfer or press marks caused by multiple joints.

· Narrow tape (e.g., 10 mm, 25 mm): For edging, wrapping guides, and fine areas. Offers greater flexibility in operation.

Width principle for graded leveling:Lower layers should be larger in area than upper layers to create a smooth sloped transition. The outermost layer must fully cover the entire repaired area.

Notes on Applying PTFE High-Temperature Tape

· Surface cleaning: Before application, thoroughly clean the hot plate surface with anhydrous alcohol to remove oil, dust, and residual adhesive for strong bonding.

· Remove air bubbles: Use a scraper to press firmly from one side to the other, ensuring tight adhesion without trapped air bubbles.

· Regular inspection: As a consumable item, PTFE tape should be inspected regularly for wear, carbonization, or lifting. Replace immediately if abnormalities are found.

· Safe operation: All work must be performed after the equipment is stopped, power is disconnected, and the hot plate is fully cooled to prevent scalding. Do not forcefully wrap and pressurize severely deformed hot plates with PTFE tape.
