In lithium battery electrode drying, Teflon high-temperature fabric is primarily used as conveyor belts or oven liners. Its core advantage lies in simultaneously solving three major problems: slurry adhesion, corrosion, and electrode scratching. Specifically, it can be summarized in the following four aspects from the perspective of a Jiangsu-based Teflon high-temperature fabric manufacturer:
Binders such as PVDF in the wet electrode slurry tend to adhere to metal conveyor belts when heated, causing coating tears. Teflon has an extremely low surface energy, making it impossible for the slurry to wet out. After drying, the electrode can be easily and completely peeled off, significantly reducing the rejection rate.
Electrode drying temperatures are typically in the range of 100–140°C, while Teflon high-temperature fabric can operate stably at 260°C for extended periods. Its uniform thermal conductivity prevents localized overheating that could cause cracks or scorching on the electrode, which is critical for maintaining consistency in electrode thickness and porosity.
The material has an extremely low coefficient of friction, effectively reducing scratches and powder shedding on the electrode coating during transport. It also eliminates burrs or oxidative contamination that metal belts might introduce, ensuring the insulation safety of the electrode.
The NMP solvent and electrolyte vapors in the electrode slurry are highly corrosive. Teflon is virtually inert to all chemicals and does not swell, degrade, or age like ordinary plastic or rubber conveyor belts, resulting in an extremely long service life.
The base material is fiberglass fabric, which offers high tensile strength and low elongation. Under long-term tensioned operation, it does not drift or stretch, ensuring precise positioning during electrode transport.
Even after prolonged use, very little carbonized residue adheres to the surface, and any residue can be wiped off with a soft cloth. Compared to metal mesh belts that require frequent scraping and washing, this significantly improves overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
Teflon high-temperature fabric is inherently flame-retardant, reducing the risk of fire spread and providing a basic level of safety protection for high-temperature drying processes.
The material can be treated with anti-static properties, which promptly dissipates static electricity accumulated during electrode transport. This prevents discharge sparks in flammable and explosive solvent vapor environments, managing risks at the source.
It is often made into Teflon mesh belts, where the open structure allows hot air to penetrate through the electrode coating, heating both the top and bottom surfaces simultaneously for more uniform and faster drying.
Compared to metal mesh belts, the fiberglass substrate is significantly lighter, effectively reducing the load on the conveying system and lowering drive energy consumption, contributing to long-term energy-saving operation.
