The PTFE tape produced by Jiangsu Aokai New Materials, a professional manufacturer of PTFE tape, uses silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive (silicone PSA). The adhesion of silicone PSA follows the three universal steps of PSA: wetting – adsorption – cohesion, but its mechanism is unique:
The silicone PSA of PTFE tape is a blend of:
· Silicone rubber (provides flexibility and softness)
· MQ silicone resin (provides rigidity and tack)
Under light pressure, the flexible silicone rubber chains flow rapidly to wet the micro rough surface of the substrate. Physical adsorption occurs via van der Waals forces and partial hydrogen bonds.
This is the most distinctive mechanism of silicone PSA in PTFE tape:
· MQ resin (the “islands”): rigid three dimensional cage like structures dispersed in the adhesive layer. They provide adhesion – the silanol groups (Si–OH) on MQ resin form strong interactions with surfaces such as glass, metal, and silicone rubber.
· Silicone rubber (the “sea”): the continuous polymer phase that provides cohesive strength to resist internal failure during peeling.By adjusting the ratio of MQ resin to silicone rubber, tack and peel strength can be precisely balanced.
During curing or manufacturing, silicone rubber chains are moderately crosslinked using peroxides or platinum catalysts to form a three dimensional network. This ensures that the adhesive layer undergoes clean interfacial peeling rather than cohesive failure (breakage inside the adhesive) under stress.
The adhesion of PTFE tape works as follows:
· Silicone rubber wets the surface and provides physical adsorption via van der Waals forces.
· MQ resin (“islands”) provides adhesion; silicone rubber (“sea”) provides cohesion.
· Moderate crosslinking strengthens cohesion and prevents internal adhesive failure.
