Jiangsu Aokai New Materials – a manufacturer of PTFE high-temperature fabrics – explains how storage conditions of PTFE emulsion are closely linked to its end-use performance. Temperature control, ambient humidity, and shelf-life maintenance during storage directly determine the stability of PTFE emulsion, which in turn affects film-forming uniformity and functionality during the PTFE emulsion impregnation process. Improper storage can cause irreversible physical changes to PTFE emulsion, rendering it unusable for production.

1. Effect of Temperature on PTFE Emulsion

Temperature is the most critical physical factor affecting the stability of PTFE emulsion, which is highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

Practice: PTFE emulsion must be strictly stored in a constant-temperature environment of 5°C to 25°C. This range ensures that the resin particles in PTFE emulsion remain suspended and dispersed.

Hazards of low temperature: If the ambient temperature drops below 0°C, water in the PTFE emulsion will freeze. Ice crystals will rupture the micelle protective layer of the emulsion, causing irreversible agglomeration of resin particles. Even if the temperature rises later, the PTFE emulsion cannot recover its original state; it will form curd-like sediments and become completely invalidated.

Hazards of high temperature: Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 35°C reduces the activity of surfactants in PTFE emulsion, intensifies Brownian motion collisions, and also triggers demulsification and sedimentation of the emulsion.

2. Effect of Humidity and Sealing on PTFE Emulsion

The airtightness of PTFE emulsion packaging directly affects its shelf life.

Environmental requirements: PTFE emulsion should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated warehouse.

Effect of sealing performance: If PTFE emulsion is left open or poorly sealed, surface moisture will evaporate rapidly, forming a hard, non-redispersible dry skin on the emulsion surface. Meanwhile, ammonia used for pH adjustment will volatilize, increasing acidity inside the emulsion and creating conditions for bacterial growth, which disrupts the colloidal chemical balance. Therefore, the container lid must be tightened immediately after each use.

3. Effect of Shelf Life and Sedimentation on PTFE Emulsion

PTFE emulsion is not a permanently stable fluid and will settle during standing.

Shelf-life management: Unopened PTFE emulsion typically has a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. Even if expired emulsion appears normal, its impregnation adhesion and film-forming properties will degrade significantly.

Regular agitation: Since resin particles in PTFE emulsion have a higher density than water, natural stratification occurs under gravity. To ensure uniform concentration, regular maintenance is required for stored emulsion. It is recommended to gently roll or invert the containers weekly or monthly to redisperse solids and prevent the formation of non-dispersible hard sediments at the bottom.

4. Direct Impact of PTFE Emulsion Condition on Impregnation Performance

The storage condition of PTFE emulsion directly determines the success of the impregnation process. Using degraded emulsion leads to the following defects:

· Uneven pick-up: Minor sedimentation causes inconsistent concentration of the impregnation solution, resulting in uneven absorption by substrates (e.g., fiberglass fabric, carbon felt) and inconsistent non-stick and corrosion-resistant properties across the final product.

· Surface defects: Emulsion containing agglomerated particles leaves visible white specks or lumps on the product surface, severely impairing appearance and smoothness.

· Pore blockage: Deteriorated PTFE emulsion exhibits abnormal viscosity increase, failing to penetrate porous materials uniformly and clogging micropores, thus losing the intended breathable and hydrophobic properties.

To ensure optimal performance in impregnation applications, Aokai New Materials strictly enforces the following PTFE emulsion management rules:

· Temperature control: Store at 5–25°C; avoid freezing or direct sunlight.

· Airtight storage: Prevent moisture evaporation and skin formation.

· Regular agitation: Shake containers periodically to avoid hard sedimentation.

· First-in, first-out: Strictly observe shelf life to avoid waste from expired products.
