PTFE (Teflon) high-temperature tape can generally be used continuously in the temperature range of -196℃ to 260℃. In most applications, the temperature resistance limit of the tape is restricted by the adhesive layer rather than the PTFE substrate. Its performance follows clear temperature-related rules:

Adhesive performance declines as temperature rises With increasing temperature, the adhesive gradually softens, creeps and even degrades, leading to reduced cohesive strength. Macroscopically, this manifests as a drop in holding adhesion.

Performance threshold determined by adhesive type Different adhesives have vastly different failure temperatures:

Adhesive Type

Typical Maximum Temperature Resistance

High-Temperature Performance

Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesive

250℃ ~ 300℃

Retains about 80% of initial adhesion at 250℃; the preferred choice for long-term high-temperature service.

Special Rubber Adhesive

200℃ ~ 220℃

Good elasticity yet moderate temperature resistance; suitable for medium-temperature scenarios.

Modified Acrylic Adhesive

150℃ ~ 180℃

Easily softens under high temperature.

To improve the high-temperature holding time, optimization is mainly carried out from three aspects: adhesive formulation, substrate performance, and interfacial bonding structure.

1. Adhesive Layer: Upgrade the Weak Link

· Select high-temperature resistant adhesive system: Prioritize silicone pressure sensitive adhesive for long-term high-temperature working conditions.

· Fluorocarbon modification: Modify silicone adhesive with fluorocarbon compounds to raise the glass transition temperature (Tg) to 230℃. After 48 hours of continuous use at 260℃, the adhesion retention rate still exceeds 85%.

· Introduce crosslinking network: Construct nano-scale crosslinking networks to greatly enhance the cohesive strength and shear resistance of the adhesive layer at high temperatures.

· Add thermal stabilizers: Incorporate hindered phenol and other thermal stabilizers into the formula to effectively inhibit oxidative degradation under high heat.

2. Substrate Layer: Raise the overall temperature resistance limit

· Nano-filler modification: Add nano silica, boron nitride nanotubes and other nanoparticles into PTFE substrate to form physical crosslinking points. The heat distortion temperature can be increased by 20–30℃, while maintaining over 90% of initial adhesion at 260℃.

· Molecular crosslinking treatment: Crosslink PTFE molecular chains to lift the continuous service temperature up to 300℃.

· Fiber reinforcement: Add 25% glass fiber or carbon fiber to boost creep resistance by 300%, enabling continuous use up to 280℃.

3. Interface & Structural Design: Enhance bonding stability

· Substrate surface treatment: Apply plasma treatment or chemical etching on PTFE surface to increase roughness and surface activity, strengthen interfacial adhesion and avoid delamination at high temperature.

· Add intermediate barrier layer: Insert a polyimide (PI) isolation layer between PTFE substrate and adhesive to block adhesive penetration and migration under high temperature, improving overall structural stability.

· Optimize composite structure: Adopt multi-layer composite structure: PTFE coating + reinforcing substrate + high-temperature stable layer, to balance heat resistance and adhesive performance comprehensively.

· Reserve thermal expansion clearance: The linear expansion coefficient of PTFE is about 10 times that of steel.

Reserve a gap of 0.15–0.3 mm in structural design to release thermal stress effectively.
