Before starting repairs, it is necessary to evaluate whether the damage is worth fixing. It is recommended to consult Aokai New Materials to ensure repair materials and methods comply with relevant hygiene and safety standards. Generally, localized small-area damage is most suitable for repair, such as surface scratches, edge tears, or holes smaller than 10–15 cm in diameter. If the damaged area is too large, located in a major stress zone, or the fabric is severely aged, replacing it with a new one is usually a more economical and reliable choice.

For different types of damage, there are several repair methods with their own advantages and limitations:

Repair Method

Main Applicable Cases

Advantages

Disadvantages / Notes

Tape / Patch Covering

Surface scratches, cracks, small holes

Simple operation, low cost

Average appearance and durability; may affect surface flatness

Hot-Press Patching

Small holes, tears requiring high strength

High repair strength, good durability

Requires professional equipment (e.g., hot press); complex operation

Professional Adhesive Filling

Edge or surface wear on conveyor belts

Good elasticity and wear resistance after repair

Mainly for conveyor belts; limited suitability for general PTFE high-temperature fabrics

Detailed Operating Procedures

Method 1: Tape / Patch Covering

Suitable for emergency repairs or applications with low strength requirements.

Materials needed:PTFE high-temperature tape or patch, industrial alcohol, clean cloth, scissors.

1. Surface Cleaning:Thoroughly clean the damaged area and surrounding surface with alcohol to ensure no oil or dust.

2. Covering and Bonding:Cut the tape or patch slightly larger than the damaged area, remove the release liner, apply smoothly, and press firmly with a roller or hard object to eliminate air bubbles.

Method 2: Hot-Press Patching (Recommended for Critical Repairs)

This method delivers high bonding strength and effectively restores the fabric’s performance, making it widely used in industrial repair.

Tools needed:Angle grinder, tungsten carbide sanding disc, F46 hot-melt film (joint adhesive), PTFE patch of the same material, industrial alcohol, hot-press welding machine or high-temperature iron (capable of 380–400°C).

1. Sanding the Damaged Area:Use an angle grinder to smooth the damaged area and create a beveled edge with a roughened surface to increase bonding area.

2. Cleaning the Sanded Surface:Wipe the sanded area completely with industrial alcohol to remove dust and grease.

3. Inserting F46 Hot-Melt Film:Cut a piece of F46 film slightly larger than the damaged area and place it between the base fabric and the patch — this is the key material for thermal fusion bonding.

4. Heating and Pressing:Heat the repair area to approximately 380–400°C under pressure until the F46 film melts, firmly bonding the patch to the fabric.

5. Holding Pressure and Cooling:Maintain pressure during natural cooling to ensure the repaired area is flat and flexible.

Safety Reminder:Sanding generates dust, and high-temperature operation poses a scalding risk. Always wear safety goggles, a dust mask, and heat-resistant gloves.

Repairing PTFE high-temperature fabric is an effective way to reduce costs, especially for minor damage. Always assess the extent of damage before operation and select an appropriate repair method based on on-site conditions.
