Jiangsu Aokai New Materials, a manufacturer of PTFE high-temperature tape, explains the advantages and disadvantages of PTFE tape versus spray coating in injection molding and extrusion demolding.
As an on-site solution, PTFE high-temperature tape offers core value in terms of flexibility and low cost.
PTFE high-temperature tape requires no professional spraying equipment — it can be applied directly by peeling off the release liner. In the event of sudden mold sticking on extrusion rollers or injection mold parting surfaces, PTFE tape is the only material that enables in-line repair without shutdown. In contrast, the spray coating process requires mold disassembly and off-site treatment, which can take several days.
For small batch trial production or mold validation, the cost of a single roll of PTFE tape is very low, whereas PTFE spray coating has high minimum order quantities and upfront preparation costs.PTFE tape allows process engineers to conduct surface modification tests with extremely low sunk costs.
PTFE high-temperature tape is typically made of fiberglass cloth impregnated with PTFE, with continuous heat resistance up to 260°C — sufficient for most general purpose plastics including PP, PE, ABS, PA, etc.Its smooth surface has a stable coefficient of friction between 0.05 and 0.1, effectively eliminating material buildup at extrusion die openings.
During mold testing or after maintenance, applying PTFE tape effectively protects the mold steel surface from early erosion by molten plastic, especially when molding flame retardant or glass fiber reinforced materials. As a disposable consumable layer, the tape can be peeled off, leaving the mold surface clean and intact.
While PTFE tape is highly convenient, it has physical limitations in long term industrial production.Below is a comparison of key performance differences between PTFE high-temperature tape and PTFE spray coating.

Comparison Item | PTFE High-Temperature Tape (Core Solution) | PTFE Spray Coating (Alternative Solution) |
Application Process | Can be manually applied on site; no mold disassembly needed. | Requires sandblasting and high temperature sintering; irreversible process. |
Service Life in Demolding | Typically lasts 60–200 molding cycles before replacement. | Hard coating can last thousands to tens of thousands of cycles. |
Impact on Dimensional Accuracy | Has a thickness of 0.08–0.25 mm, which may alter part dimensions. | Extremely thin coating (20–50 μm), no effect on precision tolerances. |
Adaptability to Complex Geometry | Only suitable for flat surfaces and large radius rollers; cannot conform to deep ribs. | Uniformly covers complex cavities, slides, and undercuts. |
Risk of Edge Buildup | Molten resin may seep into seams, requiring frequent cleaning. | Seamless, one piece surface with no dead zones for buildup. |

Surface Preparation is CriticalBefore applying PTFE tape, thoroughly clean oil, residual release agent, and oxidation from the mold surface using acetone or alcohol. Even tiny dust particles can cause blistering, which may lead to tearing by high temperature melt.
·
·
Seam TreatmentGaps naturally occur when wrapping rollers or joining flat surfaces. To prevent melt penetration and edge lifting, overlapping along the melt flow direction is recommended instead of butt joining.
·
·
Thermal Conductivity EffectThe fiberglass layer in PTFE tape provides slight thermal insulation. For thin wall, high speed injection molding, this may slightly reduce mold temperature response time and extend the cycle by 1–2 seconds — a hidden cost of using PTFE tape.
