PTFE-coated fiberglass fabric (PTFE-coated glass fiber cloth) has a very wide range of applications in the electronics and electrical industry, mainly relying on its resistance to high and low temperatures (long-term service from approximately –196°C to 260°C, with instantaneous resistance up to above 340°C), excellent electrical insulation, non-stick properties, chemical corrosion resistance, low friction, and weather resistance. According to manufacturers of PTFE-coated fiberglass fabric in Jiangsu, the specific applications are concentrated in the following areas:
This is the most core application, with PTFE fabric often used as an insulation material rated above Class H (180°C).
- Motors and Transformers: Used as inter-turn insulation, slot insulation, and phase-to-phase insulation in motors, as well as layer and end insulation in transformers, capable of withstanding high-temperature and high-voltage environments.
- Coil Insulation: Used for wrapping electromagnetic coils and insulating lead wires, with toughness and insulation properties far superior to ordinary tapes.
- Electric Heating Equipment: Used as an isolation layer in electric heating coils and heating tubes, providing thermal conduction, insulation, and anti-sticking functions, effectively extending equipment service life.
It is an indispensable consumable material in the PCB lamination process, known as "lamination release fabric" or "release cloth."
- Release and Cushioning: Placed between steel plates and copper foil to prevent epoxy resin from adhering to and contaminating the steel plates, while evenly transferring heat and pressure, reducing defects such as white spots and slippage during lamination.
- Clean Conveying: Leveraging its non-stick properties, it is used to hold prepregs (PP sheets) and copper-clad laminates, preventing dust adsorption and ensuring a clean board surface.
Utilizing its excellent non-stick properties and temperature resistance to ensure soldering quality.
- Solder Masking: In wave soldering or reflow soldering, it is wrapped around fixtures or workpieces to protect areas such as gold fingers and connectors that do not require soldering, preventing solder from sticking.
- Conveyor Belts: Made into small-sized mesh belts or flat belts for use in reflow ovens and wave soldering conveyor equipment, carrying precision electronic components, with easy cleaning if solder adheres.
- Soldering Workstation Mats: Placed on workbenches during repair or manual soldering, providing heat resistance, non-stick solder properties, and flame retardancy, keeping the work surface clean.
- Hot Air Gun Protective Covers: Wrapped around the nozzles of hot air guns to prevent heat damage to surrounding components when desoldering ICs.
- High-Temperature Cable Wrapping Tape: Used as an insulating shielding layer and thermal barrier for cables, especially suitable for wiring harnesses in confined high-temperature areas such as aerospace and automotive engines.
- Thermal Sleeves and Fireproof Covers: Sewn into removable sleeves, curtains, and covers to protect sensitive cables and hydraulic lines from radiant heat and flying solder spatter.
- Heat-Shrink Tubing Expansion Processing: Used as a high-temperature section conveyor belt or isolation pad during the expansion and shaping process of heat-shrink tubing.
By adding conductive materials to the PTFE coating, anti-static PTFE-coated fiberglass fabric can be produced.
- Cleanroom Padding: Used as conveyor belts, protective curtains, and workstation mats in dust-free workshops, providing high-temperature resistance, non-adhesion to dust, and efficient dissipation of surface static electricity.
- Semiconductor and Photovoltaic Manufacturing: Used as high-temperature conveyor belts in solar cell soldering machines, as well as clean-environment isolation and anti-sticking consumables in semiconductor wafer processing.
PTFE-coated fiberglass cloth is the basic reinforcing material for manufacturing high-frequency copper-clad laminates (PTFE-based substrates). Due to its low dielectric constant and extremely low dissipation factor, it is a key raw material for 5G base station antennas, radar, satellite communications, and high-frequency connectors.
