PTFE high-temperature tape is widely used in marine environments – on offshore platforms, ships, coastal wind turbines, and salt-laden industrial zones. The PTFE coating itself is highly resistant to salt spray. However, the tape’s overall performance depends on two weaker points: the adhesive layer and the edges of the fiberglass substrate.
Salt spray can penetrate through adhesive interfaces or wick into exposed fiberglass edges, causing loss of adhesion or substrate corrosion. Therefore, evaluating salt spray resistance means testing whether the adhesive retains bonding strength, resists water absorption, and protects the underlying metal.
Aokai PTFE manufactures PTFE tape validated for marine service. This guide explains standard test methods, acceptance criteria, and application requirements for high-salt-fog environments.
Standardized testing ensures that tape meets marine-grade durability. The most common method is neutral salt spray (NSS) per ISO 9227 or ASTM B117.
Laminate the PTFE tape onto a standard metal test panel (e.g., SUS304 stainless steel or the intended substrate) using a roller.
Seal the tape edges with waterproof sealant to prevent abnormal salt fog penetration from the cut edges. This simulates proper installation where edges are protected.
Prepare sufficient specimens for pre-test, post-test, and control groups.
Place specimens in a salt spray chamber at 35°C, 5% NaCl solution.
Test durations: 96h, 240h, 500h, 1000h, or as agreed.
Tilt test panels at 15°–30° from vertical for even salt fog deposition.
Indicator | Method | Acceptance Criteria |
|---|---|---|
Visual inspection | Check for edge lifting, peeling, blistering, cracking, softening | No defects per ISO 4628 / GB/T 6461 |
Adhesion retention | Measure 180° peel strength (GB/T 2792) before and after | ≥80% retention (typical requirement) |
Metal corrosion | Peel off tape; inspect bonded surface for rust or corrosion spots | No corrosion or within agreed limits |
Insulation performance (if applicable) | Measure volume resistance after test | No significant decline |
For real-world use on offshore platforms, vessels, coastal wind power facilities, and industrial zones with high salt fog, PTFE tape must meet stricter criteria.
Silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive: Ultra-low moisture absorption, outstanding salt fog resistance, weatherability. Maintains long-term bonding strength and does not corrode stainless steel.
Acrylic PSA – NOT suitable: Easily hydrolyzes, plasticizes, and loses adhesion under high temperature and heavy salt fog. Acrylic should never be used in marine environments.
The fiberglass cloth must be fully impregnated with PTFE, with no pinholes. This prevents salt ingress via capillary action along the fibers, which would cause delamination.
During installation, seal tape overlaps and edges with dedicated weather-resistant sealant (e.g., silicone-based). This blocks salt fog penetration paths – the most critical step for long-term reliability.
Minimum 1000h neutral salt spray (NSS) without spontaneous lifting or blistering.
180° peel strength retention ≥80% after 1000h.
No corrosion on the underlying metal (or corrosion traces within agreed limits).
For extremely harsh conditions (e.g., marine atmospheric zones with wet-dry cycles), 2000h NSS or cyclic corrosion testing (CCT) is recommended.
High temperature + salt fog: For exhaust pipe wrapping or heat-tracing cable insulation, conduct combined aging tests (high heat + salt spray).
UV exposure: Outdoor marine use requires UV resistance – the adhesive must not chalk or debond under ultraviolet radiation.
Surface preparation: Fully degrease and derust bonding surfaces. Matching primer is recommended to enhance interfacial bonding and block salt fog intrusion.
Regular inspection: Check tape edges during service for blistering or peeling. Replace failed tape promptly to prevent crevice corrosion of the bonded structure.
Factor | Requirement |
|---|---|
Adhesive | Silicone PSA (not acrylic) |
Substrate | Fully PTFE-impregnated fiberglass, no pinholes |
Edge sealing | Weather-resistant sealant on all exposed edges and overlaps |
Salt spray test | ≥1000h NSS, peel retention ≥80%, no blistering |
Surface prep | Degrease, derust, apply primer |
Maintenance | Regular inspection; replace if edge lifting or blistering |
Composite environments | Test high-temp + salt fog + UV if applicable |
