In chemical plants, refineries, and wastewater treatment facilities, equipment linings face a brutal environment: strong acids, hot alkalis, organic solvents, and temperature extremes. Rubber linings swell and crack. FRP linings blister. Stainless steel corrodes.
PTFE high-temperature fabric (PTFE-coated fiberglass) outperforms these traditional materials. It is chemically inert, heat-resistant, dimensionally stable, and non-stick – all in one.
Aokai PTFE has supplied PTFE fabric for anti-corrosion lining applications for decades. Below are four key advantages, plus real-world application examples.
The core advantage of PTFE is its near-universal chemical resistance. It is often called the “King of Plastics” for good reason.
Strong acids: Sulfuric, nitric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, and even aqua regia (a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids that dissolves gold)
Strong alkalis: Sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonia
Organic solvents: Alcohols, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene), chlorinated solvents
Other corrosives: Oxidizers, salts, and most industrial chemicals
Molten alkali metals (sodium, potassium) – will destroy PTFE
Fluorine gas and strong fluorinating agents at high temperatures
Hydrofluoric acid (HF) – attacks the fiberglass substrate if the coating has pinholes
Practical note: For hydrofluoric acid service, use a special HF-resistant grade or ensure the PTFE coating is completely pinhole-free (multiple coating passes). Aokai PTFE offers such grades.
Anti-corrosion linings often face not just chemicals, but temperature extremes. PTFE fabric handles both ends of the spectrum.
Continuous operating temperature: -70°C to 260°C
Short-term peak: 350°C (brief excursions)
Thermal aging test: After 200 days continuous at 250°C, mechanical strength shows no obvious decline
Remains flexible down to -70°C
Can withstand -180°C (liquid nitrogen temperatures) without cracking – though flexibility is reduced
In desulfurization equipment, flue gas can reach 200-250°C. Rubber linings degrade above 120°C. PTFE fabric thrives. In cryogenic chemical processing (-50°C), PTFE does not become brittle like many plastics.
Beyond chemical and thermal resistance, PTFE fabric offers several mechanical benefits that make it an excellent lining material.
The fiberglass substrate gives PTFE fabric high tensile strength and very low elongation – typically <0.5% under load. This means:
The lining does not stretch or sag over time
No wrinkling or buckling due to thermal expansion
Maintains tight fit against the equipment wall
PTFE’s friction coefficient is as low as 0.05-0.1. Most substances cannot adhere to its surface. For anti-corrosion linings, this means:
Residue from chemical reactions does not build up on the lining
Cleaning between batches is fast – often just a water rinse
No “baking on” of dried chemical deposits
Dielectric constant <2.6
High volume resistivity (>10⊃1;⁵ Ω·cm)
Suitable for insulating wraps in electronic and electrical equipment where corrosion protection is also needed
Outstanding weather resistance (UV stable)
Non-flammable – self-extinguishing (UL94 V-0 rating typical)
No measurable degradation after years of outdoor exposure
Not all anti-corrosion linings need to be food-grade. But when they do – in food processing, pharmaceutical, or potable water applications – PTFE fabric delivers.
FDA 21 CFR 177.1550 – for direct and indirect food contact
EU Regulation 1935/2004 – for food contact materials
Non-toxic, odorless even at high temperatures
No leaching of harmful substances into food or pharmaceuticals
Baking sheets and oven liners in commercial bakeries (non-stick, easy cleaning)
Pharmaceutical production equipment – reaction vessels and drying trays
Food processing tanks – where acidic or oily foods contact the lining
Based on the above advantages, PTFE high-temperature fabric is widely used in the following fields:
Petrochemical pipelines – internal lining to prevent corrosion from crude oil, refined products, and sour gas
Desulfurization equipment (power plants) – lining for scrubbers, ductwork, and chimneys where flue gas contains SOₓ and HCl
Reaction vessels and storage tanks – lining for tanks holding concentrated acids, alkalis, or aggressive solvents
Pickling tanks (steel processing) – lining for tanks containing hydrochloric or sulfuric acid for metal cleaning
Field data from Aokai PTFE: In a power plant desulfurization tower, PTFE fabric lining lasted 3 years without failure. Rubber lining previously lasted only 9 months. That is a 4x life extension.
Baking sheets and oven liners – non-stick, easy clean, FDA compliant
Microwave gaskets – heat-resistant and non-stick
Pharmaceutical production equipment – linings for drying trays, mixing vessels, and tablet coating pans
High-temperature conveyor belts for photovoltaic laminators – combine anti-corrosion with non-stick and heat resistance
Heat sealing plates – PTFE fabric as non-stick cover
Electrical insulating liners – where both insulation and corrosion protection are required
