The core purpose of fiberglass surface treatment is to build a molecular bridge between inorganic fiberglass and organic PTFE, so as to fundamentally solve their inherent incompatibility.

Specifically, the surface of fiberglass contains hydrophilic polar groups, while PTFE is a hydrophobic non-stick material with extremely low surface energy (approx. 18 mN/m). Direct compounding will cause repulsion between the two materials.The silanol groups (Si-OH) in coupling agents can condense with active groups on fiberglass surface to form stable Si-O-Si chemical bonds, serving as firm chemical anchoring points. The organic functional groups at the other end can tightly combine with coatings via physical entanglement or chemical reaction.

Meanwhile, the treated fiberglass forms an orderly amphipathic structure, which greatly improves the wetting effect of PTFE emulsion and reduces internal pores and defects of the coating.In addition, melt-processable fluoroplastics such as PFA and FEP are usually added into PTFE emulsion as hot-melt adhesives. They react with treated fiberglass to form a gradient interfacial buffer layer, eliminate sudden stress changes and further enhance bonding fastness.

Omitting this surface treatment will trigger a series of consequential problems:

Interfacial incompatibility and delamination This is the most critical defect. Untreated fiberglass repels PTFE, making the coating unable to adhere firmly. The coating is prone to peeling and flaking under slight external force such as scratching and bending. In actual working conditions with mechanical stress or alternating hot and cold cycles like high-temperature rollers and demolding conveyors, composites without stable chemical bonding will suffer rapid interlayer separation and structural failure.

Overall decline in mechanical properties Weak interfacial bonding leads to obvious reduction in tensile strength, folding resistance and wear resistance. Uneven wetting on raw fiberglass leaves invisible micro gaps and defects inside coatings, which become the starting points of mechanical failure.

Deteriorated dielectric properties Under long-term high temperature service, residual moisture and tiny gaps in the interface will trigger oxidation reactions. Generated oxides act as conductive media, resulting in increased dielectric constant and dielectric loss. This is a fatal flaw for fields with strict electrical performance requirements such as copper clad laminates (CCL) and high-grade film materials.

Sharply shortened service life Affected by the above adverse factors, untreated finished products feature extremely low overall reliability, and their service life is only a fraction of qualified treated products.
